Casino’s Contribution for Suicide Prevention
In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana has donated $25,000 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The funds are intended to support the Out of the Darkness Northwest Indiana Walk, taking place on October 3 in Wicker Park, Highland. Valparaiso University’s Institutional Impact Grant
Valparaiso University, alongside Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, has been awarded a joint Institutional Impact grant valued at $492,703. Provided by the Educating Character Initiative at Wake Forest University, this grant supports an initiative called Building Lives for Good: Character Formation through Story. This program aims to help students form internal narratives for personal growth using narrative pedagogy, which involves storytelling and shared experiences. The initiative will pilot stages and incorporate findings for improved implementation.
Women’s Fund Grants Announced
The Women’s Fund of Porter County is distributing $65,000 in grants to local organizations addressing urgent issues for women and children. Beneficiaries include the Northwest Indiana Food Council and Parents as Teachers of Porter County, each receiving $25,000, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which will receive $15,000. Car Seat Safety Events by Franciscan Health
Franciscan Health Trauma Services organizes free car seat safety checks during National Child Passenger Safety Month. Scheduled for September 23 and 25, these checks occur at Franciscan Health Michigan City’s Legacy Campus and Munster Fire Station No. 2, respectively. Purdue University Northwest’s Enrollment Insights
Recently, Purdue University Northwest marked the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year. They welcomed 1,653 new undergraduate students, achieving a record 70.8% retention rate for returning second-year students. This retention reflects a nearly 5% increase over two years. PNW sees its largest influx of first-year students from local high schools in their service areas, with around 80% of students being Indiana residents. The total enrollment for undergraduate, graduate, and online programs is 6,103 for the fall.
