Sara Gilio’s Rising Star in Oswego Volleyball

Last season, Oswego’s Sara Gilio navigated her way through varsity volleyball as a sophomore while managing a fractured foot. This year, as a junior, she is truly excelling. Gilio, an outside hitter, is catching up statistically with Hannah Herrick, a Dayton recruit, giving the Panthers a formidable pair on the left side.

“Hannah has always been someone I admired,” said Gilio. “Playing with her since we were young, competing alongside her is incredible. We both contribute to the team’s success. It’s an amazing opportunity, considering her college future.”

Gilio’s performance was remarkable Tuesday night, leading with seven kills and serving four aces, resulting in a 25-12, 25-12 victory over Oswego East.

Herrick supported Oswego with five kills and four aces. For Oswego East, Ashley Crouch led with three kills, and Tori Vlcek added two.

Gilio’s previous foot injury sidelined her for a month. Returning just before the playoffs, she struggled to regain form. “She did what she could then,” said Oswego coach Gary Mosley. “Now, she’s in a great rhythm.”

For Gilio, confidence has been transformative. Moving from sophomore to junior, comfort on the court increased. “Last year was tough, but as a junior, I belong. Confidence makes all the difference,” Gilio explained.

The statistics tell the story. Herrick leads with 191 kills, while Gilio follows closely with 174. Coach Mosley notes, “You see her getting comfortable.”

Herrick, having faced similar challenges, acts as a mentor. “It’s fantastic,” Herrick shared. “Playing with her feels like having a little sister on the court. Supporting her is important.”

Gilio remains uncommitted in college choices but is exploring options. Her connection with Herrick, who has undergone the recruiting process, offers guidance. “Hannah is someone I can talk to. We share the same work ethic,” Gilio remarked.

Gilio’s strength goes beyond hitting. She dominates at the service line, highlighted by serving five consecutive points, including three aces, early in the second game.

“Serving is thrilling,” said Gilio. “Starting the play is crucial and enjoyable.”

Coach Mosley appreciates Gilio’s dedication. “Few athletes are as coachable as Sara. Her humility is evident. Her talent is burgeoning. She remains hungry and aggressive,” Mosley stated.

As Gilio continues to shine, Mosley believes her potential matches Herrick’s. “Her future is up to her. Some team will discover a hidden gem,” Mosley concluded.
