Claims by California Governor Gavin Newsom that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department conducted a politically motivated “fishing expedition” against him are under new scrutiny. Reports suggest that some federal investigations began before Trump’s second administration.
Newsom has argued that the Justice Department is weaponizing investigations against him. Yet, multiple news outlets indicate that some activities originated prior to Trump’s return to the White House. According to CalMatters, two criminal investigations connected to Newsom have been active for about a year. These originated from whistleblowers and local complaints, as reported by a Justice Department source.
Additionally, an inquiry involving Dana Williamson, Newsom’s former chief of staff, was initiated during the Biden administration. Williamson pleaded guilty to corruption charges without implicating Newsom. CBS News, Axios, and other outlets suggest that at least one federal investigation began in California about a year ago, not at DOJ headquarters in Washington.
Newsom insists the DOJ is retaliating for his criticism of Trump, describing the inquiry as politically motivated. His administration seeks records through the Freedom of Information Act to identify who ordered the investigation.
Todd Blanche, Acting Attorney General, disputes Newsom’s claims, stating they are “not grounded in fact,” although he did not confirm any ongoing investigations.
Newsom’s office countered with a social media post, mocking Blanche, and asserted, “Trump goons know it’s not a crime to lie to a reporter.” CalMatters reported expanding federal scrutiny, including notable figures like Jennifer Siebel Newsom, examining tax filings, nonprofits, and behested payments.
Fox News Digital noted that investigators looked into Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s finances but have not directly targeted Governor Newsom. Requests for comment from DOJ, the White House, and Newsom remain unanswered.
