LSU has completed its roster for the new season just before the SEC requests a temporary restraining order from a federal judge in Alabama. After weeks of court hearings involving athletes such as former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, LSU has opted to exclude both players from its lineup. Head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed the roster, adding Gabriel Reliford and Aidan Anding to meet the 105-player limit.
This decision was made after Wright and Harris amended their legal cases in district court to include the SEC as a defendant. Last week, the court awarded the players an injunction after a 12-hour session where SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey gave testimony in Baton Rouge.
The SEC filed its own lawsuit against LSU, Lane Kiffin, and members of the Tigers athletic department in federal court.
Attorney Tony Clayton questioned Sankey on whether he had authorized the lawsuit, to which Sankey referred to the authority of presidents and chancellors he represents. Sankey emphasized the First Amendment right for the conference and its members to govern their own decisions.
Five days after the injunction, LSU finalized its roster without the involved players, releasing it before the recent game against Clemson. Despite this decision, a federal court hearing in Birmingham is scheduled, where the SEC seeks a temporary restraining order to enforce rules on pro-athletes returning to college sports.
The SEC stated, “Today, the Southeastern Conference, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, filed a request for a temporary restraining order in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama to protect the right of the Conference and its member institutions to govern themselves.”
SEC also noted the importance of adhering to conference rules and principles as part of its membership commitment.
Lane Kiffin spoke after LSU’s 51-10 victory over Clemson about choosing not to include Wright and Harris, expressing his struggle over the criticism received for his decision. Kiffin emphasized his belief in fighting for what was right for the athletes.
Furthermore, the SEC has accused LSU of allowing Kiffin unchecked authority at LSU, highlighting concerns over a lack of control over his actions by LSU’s President Wade Rousse and Athletic Director Verge Ausberry.
The situation remains unresolved, with LSU and SEC continuing to clash over this contentious issue.
