Businesswoman Lily Tang Williams won the Republican primary in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, surpassing three other candidates. The district covers the entire western part of the state from north to south.
Tang Williams, who was also the candidate for the seat in the 2024 election, proved victorious due to her strong fundraising efforts. She raised nearly $1.2 million, in contrast to the $175,000 collected by her closest rival, Victor Orlando.
As a Chinese immigrant and former chair of the state’s Libertarian Party, Tang Williams calls herself a survivor of communism. In an interview with WMUR, she described herself as ‘open-minded’ and ‘independent’, emphasizing her readiness to oppose President Donald Trump when necessary to represent her would-be constituents.
When asked about the conflict in Iran, she criticized oppressive regimes and expressed her desire for Trump to devise a plan to end the conflict and secure peace. She also spoke against politicians who use their positions for personal gain.
Trump-backed nominees are gaining traction as the president strengthens control over the party.
The primary race also included Dan Nicholson and Michael Anthony Callis, who garnered minimal support. The Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and the White Mountain National Forest were notable features in the district, highlighting New Hampshire’s scenic beauty.
Both Tang Williams and Orlando positioned themselves as center-right, appealing to a state largely governed by Democrats. In the 2024 election, Tang Williams secured 47% of the vote in the primarily Democratic New Hampshire. The district is represented by Democrat Rep. Maggie Goodlander.
