The Southeastern Conference highlighted the importance of member schools adhering to the rule against adding athletes who have signed professional contracts. Previously, the guidelines were clear: signing with a professional team marked the end of NCAA eligibility.
Before facing Clemson in the season opener, LSU and Head Coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged the SEC’s stance by opting not to add Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to their 105-man roster.

During an appearance on SEC Nation, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum noted that there is strong sentiment within the SEC regarding this issue. Some members were so serious that they would consider voting to remove LSU from the conference.
“The situation has tarnished the league,” Finebaum commented. “While it is unlikely to happen and probably shouldn’t, if a vote were held today, many SEC presidents might support ousting LSU. Fans likely wouldn’t be upset by such a decision.”
Finebaum criticized Kiffin, describing him as “childish,” and admonished LSU’s leadership for failing to properly manage their new head coach. He praised Commissioner Sankey’s leadership in upholding the reputation of the SEC.
“In a chaotic week, there was a hero: Greg Sankey, SEC commissioner,” Finebaum stated. “With the support of 15 other presidents, he protected the integrity of this prestigious league during a time filled with chaos and moral decline in our sport. He averted what could have been a disastrous chapter in our history.”
It is uncertain whether Kiffin and LSU will attempt to include Wright or Harris later this season.
