Republican Initiative for Patriotism in Schools
Florida Republican Sen. Ashley Moody has introduced legislation aimed at emphasizing patriotism in Washington, D.C. schools. The proposal, known as the PLEDGE Act, seeks to mandate the display of the American flag in classrooms and require daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by students. Moody argues that this initiative will instill national pride and respect for American values.
Current Education Landscape
According to a press release from Moody’s office, some schools in Washington, D.C. lack both flag displays and designated times for reciting the Pledge. Conservative voices have raised concerns that progressive causes may overshadow traditional civic values in the district’s educational environment. Moody states that teaching students to love and understand America’s principles is crucial against what she perceives as activist-focused education.
In America, over 40 states have some form of Pledge requirement in schools, but Washington, D.C. does not. Moody’s proposal aims to bridge this gap by reinforcing pride in the country’s freedoms and responsibilities.
Political Context
The introduction of this bill occurs amid a competitive mayoral race in Washington, D.C., where socialist candidate Janeese Lewis George leads the polls. Her campaign aligns with the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) movement, known for its criticism of traditional American values and advocacy for social ownership over free-market capitalism.
The DSA pushes for significant political changes, such as abolishing the Electoral College and expanding voting rights to noncitizens. A Gallup poll from June 2025 highlights a generational divide in national pride, with less than half of Generation Z expressing strong pride in their American identity compared to older age groups.
Concerns Over Education Content
The DC Public Schools curriculum includes a focus on progressive topics, such as the contributions of LGBTQ+ figures and historical analysis of queer culture during the Black Renaissance. Fifth-grade standards involve comparing the experiences of LGBTQ+ service members post-World War II.
Previously, during President Donald Trump’s administration, initiatives were undertaken to promote patriotic visibility in the nation’s capital, including the installation of large American flags at the White House.
Washington, D.C. has been a hub for political protests and demonstrations, with the National Guard deployed during Trump’s tenure to maintain order.
