Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina passed away suddenly on Saturday evening at the age of 71. Following his death, the preliminary findings from the Washington D.C. medical examiner’s office have indicated that he experienced an aortic dissection. This condition involves a tear in the main artery, a serious issue that can prove fatal swiftly if not treated.
Aortic dissection occurs when the inner layer of the large blood vessel branching off the heart tears. Blood rushes through the tear, causing the layers of the artery wall to separate. If the blood-filled channel ruptures through the outside aortic wall, it is often deadly.
The condition can strike suddenly and requires immediate medical attention to improve chances of survival. The medical examiner’s report suggests this was the cause of the senator’s unexpected demise.
