Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona has called for an investigation into the conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln. His concerns arise from a report by the grandmother of a sailor. She noted her grandson lost a significant amount of weight during the carrier’s prolonged deployment.
Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, shared this account on Morning Edition. The grandmother described her grandson as already thin when he joined the Navy. She observed a further weight loss of 20 to 25 pounds.
“He’s struggling,” Kelly recounted, highlighting the soldier’s challenging situation. “It’s depressing, and it’s a very difficult situation,” he added.
Sen. Kelly criticized the responses from President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He described their reactions to the concerns about the Lincoln as dismissive.
Kelly, alongside other lawmakers, seeks an investigation. They want a bipartisan congressional delegation to visit the carrier and evaluate the conditions firsthand.
