Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, continues to assert that Dr. Anthony Fauci should face legal consequences. Paul, speaking on a recent episode of MS NOW, reiterated his belief that the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases deserved to potentially face prison time.
According to Paul, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a Senate hearing that Paul chaired. In that hearing, Paul expressed doubt regarding the potential for legal accountability due to a pardon from former President Joe Biden. The senator opined that Fauci, under advice from his legal team, might have wanted to avoid speaking with Paul because of Paul’s stance on him serving jail time.
Consequences for Lying?
On Morning Joe, Paul again stated his belief that Fauci should face consequences for his involvement in gain-of-function research. Paul argued that lying to Congress is a serious crime that should lead to felony charges and potential jail time.
Did he lie to Congress? I think he did, and people who lie to Congress should be charged with a felony and, if convicted, go to jail, Paul said.
Paul emphasized his focus on uncovering the truth about Fauci’s involvement in gain-of-function research, which is alleged to have been connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although Paul did not name others who might deserve a criminal investigation, he suggested they should apologize and acknowledged their culpability in other forms.
Nefarious Intentions?
When asked if Dr. Fauci had a nefarious agenda, Paul avoided using that specific term. Instead, he suggested Fauci believed that experts like himself should decide for the public, indicating an arrogance in his approach. He further highlighted Fauci’s changing public statements about masks as an example.
I would say it’s wrongheaded, Paul remarked, adding that Fauci acts with an arrogance that should not remain unchallenged.
In 2021, Paul informed Hannity that lying about gain-of-function research could result in a five-year jail sentence. Paul indicated this method involves altering an organism or virus to enhance its capabilities.
Paul expressed concerns to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in 2024, reaffirming his stance on Fauci’s alleged lies to Congress based on private emails which contradicted his public statements.
