The shooting of a man in Biddeford has quickly influenced the Senate race in Maine. Democrats are drawing connections between Senator Susan Collins and President Trump’s immigration policies.
On Monday, a federal immigration agent shot a man in Biddeford. This incident has become a focal point for Democrats seeking to replace Graham Platner as their Senate nominee. They are attempting to associate Collins, the incumbent Republican, with Trump’s immigration actions.
Two Democratic candidates, Dr. Nirav Shah and Troy Jackson, went to Biddeford to demonstrate against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Mr. Jackson protested outside Ms. Collins’s office, calling for the “abolishment of ICE.”
The details of the shooting remain unclear. State and local officials have demanded a comprehensive investigation. The Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE agents were executing a removal order for someone in the country illegally.
There is uncertainty over whether the shot individual, identified as a 26-year-old from Colombia by immigration advocates, was the target.
As more information became available, Ms. Collins called for an “impartial and complete investigation.” Meanwhile, Maine Democrats are gearing up for a late July convention. They will select a new nominee, with several candidates highlighting Collins’s past ICE support.
