Senate Republicans Remove Security Funding from Immigration Bill

Senate Republicans are set to remove a contentious plan to allocate $1 billion in security funds for President Trump’s White House ballroom project from an immigration bill, following a backlash within their ranks.

“My understanding is that the security money has come out, and my understanding is it’s because the votes aren’t there,” stated Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, post a meeting with Republican senators.

The specifics of the bill remain under development, and GOP leaders have refrained from discussing its content. The possibility of incorporating general funds for the Secret Service, usable for similar purposes without a direct link to the ballroom, remains uncertain.

The decision to exclude the funding, expected for a vote on Thursday, indicates a hesitance among Republicans to support President Trump’s project directly. It highlights the constraints on Trump’s influence over Senate Republicans, who mostly acquiesced to his demands during his second term.

Republicans initially included the funding in legislation aiming to channel about $72 billion into Trump’s immigration enforcement initiative. However, obstacles arose quickly. On Saturday, the Senate’s nonpartisan parliamentarian ruled that the provision contravened the procedural rules protecting the bill from a Democratic filibuster. This forced the party to either omit the clause or modify it to adhere to legislative regulations.
