America’s 250th birthday saw severe weather and a heat wave affecting large areas across the country. Numerous utility customers experienced power outages, with many still without electricity.

Heat and Storms in the Northeast and Midwest

The Northeast faced record-high temperatures, while thunderstorms in the Midwest caused downed trees and disrupted power lines, complicating transportation across various states. A severe storm hit New York late Friday, leaving many without power amidst soaring temperatures. Central Park reached a high of 98 degrees.

The National Weather Service reported Atlantic City, New Jersey, recorded its highest July temperature at 105 degrees. Strong winds reaching up to 70 mph were reported in places like Perth Amboy, New Jersey, causing disruptions to train services and damaging trees.

Over 750,000 residents in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey were without power by Saturday noon. Crews from 12 states and Canada were mobilized to assist with power restoration efforts.

Celebration Disruptions Due to Weather

Many cities had to cancel or reschedule their July Fourth festivities due to the storms. Belleville, New Jersey, postponed its events for safety reasons. Annapolis, Maryland, canceled its parade and a scheduled performance due to anticipated severe weather. Philadelphia also called off its parade due to extreme heat.

Washington, D.C. faced temporary evacuations at the National Mall during the Freedom 250 celebrations due to a nearby severe thunderstorm. Authorities urged attendees to seek immediate shelter.

Heat-Related Incidents in Washington, D.C.

A 79-year-old woman was hospitalized after a heat-related emergency during the celebrations. D.C.’s America’s Independence Day Parade was canceled Saturday morning due to the high temperatures.

Temperatures in Washington reached a record warm low of 84 degrees. By July Fourth, temperatures were climbing back towards triple digits.

Tragic Incident on Geneva Lake

Extreme weather turned tragic in Wisconsin when a boat capsized on Geneva Lake amid a storm. Three children lost their lives. The boat carried ten people, including four children, all of whom wore life jackets. Despite this, three children were unresponsive after rescue efforts.

The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the incident, which was attributed to a sudden storm causing hazardous conditions.

The Mayor of Lake Geneva declared an emergency. Downed trees and power lines blocked streets, causing additional disruptions and minor injuries.
