Democratic nominee for the Senate, Sherrod Brown, holds an 8-point lead over incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted in Ohio, according to a recent Fox News poll. Brown, with three Senate terms under his belt, aims to make a comeback in Washington after his 2024 loss to Republican Bernie Moreno. He faces Husted, who assumed his Senate role in January 2025 after JD Vance became vice president.
The Fox News poll reveals Brown garners 53 percent of hypothetical votes, while Husted stands at 45 percent among registered Ohio voters. This poll, conducted between May 28 and June 1, involved 1,015 participants and includes a 3 percent margin of error. Newsweek has reached out to both campaigns for comments via email.
Important Details
Brown and Husted clinched their nominations last month in Ohio’s primary election. The poll indicates Husted’s favorability at 41 percent versus a 50 percent unfavorable rating. Brown’s ratings show 53 percent favorability against a 44 percent unfavorable mark.
Former President Donald Trump, in the same poll, has a 42 percent favorability compared to a 57 percent unfavorable rating. This marks a significant swing from a November 2024 survey, which showed Trump with a 52 percent favorable and 46 percent unfavorable rating.
Brown enjoys 98 percent support among Democrats, whereas Husted commands 86 percent support from Republicans. Notably, 13 percent of Republicans support Brown, while only 2 percent of Democrats back Husted. The Cook Political Report categorizes the Ohio U.S. Senate race as a ‘toss-up,’ grouping it with similar races in Maine and Michigan.
Social media has become a battlefield for the candidates. Last month, Team Husted criticized Brown on X, stating, ‘Sherrod Brown was elected to office in 1974. He was in Washington for 32 years. Yet he can’t name one accomplishment from his time in office. That’s why he’s resorted to lying in his campaign ads.’ In response, Brown remarked, ‘Gas prices went up, but your commute didn’t get shorter. Health care premiums doubled, but your doctor isn’t charging less. Groceries cost more than ever, but your family still needs dinner on the table. But Jon Husted says affordability isn’t a problem in Ohio. Jon Husted created this crisis, he’ll never fix it.’
Comparative Polls
Other polls show varying results. A Bowling Green State University/YouGov survey before the primary gave Husted 50 percent of hypothetical votes, with Brown at 47 percent. This poll surveyed 1,000 registered Ohio voters from April 7 to April 14 and had a 3.88 percent margin of error.
Additionally, a NetChoice survey by Echelon Insights showed Husted with 51 percent support to Brown’s 45 percent. This survey included 413 Ohio voters from April 3 to April 9, featuring a margin of error of 5.8 percent.
