Actor Shia LaBeouf has been sentenced to probation following his guilty plea for punching three people outside a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras celebrations. The sentencing, which includes mandatory attendance in an alcohol treatment program, was delivered by an Orleans Parish judge. LaBeouf, known for roles in ‘Transformers’ (2007) and ‘Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull’ (2008), had been on bail after his arrest near the French Quarter.
Footage from February 17 showed a shirtless LaBeouf shoving an individual to the ground and striking another in the face near the bar. The incident report includes claims of using homophobic slurs. He pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery, receiving a suspended six-month sentence with two years of probation. Additionally, he must keep away from the victims and the bar.
LaBeouf’s attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, stated he took accountability for his actions, describing the event as a minor bar altercation. She argued there was no bias or prejudice involved. The Orleans Parish District Attorney consulted with the victims before reaching the plea deal. Jeffrey Damnit, identified by police as Jeffrey Klein and an entertainer in the area, claimed he was pushed by LaBeouf and targeted with threats and homophobic slurs.
Damnit’s lawyer expressed hope for LaBeouf’s rehabilitation, emphasizing equality and safety for everyone in New Orleans. After being charged, LaBeouf was sent back for further drug and alcohol rehabilitation. In an interview, LaBeouf admitted to struggles with anger and ego rather than alcohol, expressing his discomfort around gay individuals and acknowledging it as homophobic behavior.
LaBeouf, who converted to Catholicism recently, has had multiple legal issues. His previous arrests include a 2017 incident in New York for an alleged assault and another in Georgia for public drunkenness. In 2020, he faced charges of misdemeanor battery and petty theft in Los Angeles. That same year, FKA Twigs, an English singer-actor, accused LaBeouf of abuse and settled the lawsuit in July.
The actor gained early fame as a child star on the Disney Channel series ‘Even Stevens.’
