Shifting Trends in Dating: The Rise of Morning Dates

The old adage about the early bird might apply to dating. A survey by Kellogg’s in Australia reveals 64% of singles are open to having breakfast on a first date.

Dating appears more challenging for over half of Australian singles, according to the poll. About 66% say dating apps make genuine connections harder to find.

More singles are choosing morning meetups over traditional evening dates. This shift includes coffee or breakfast, which 31% say reduces pressure.

On a segment of ‘The Five,’ co-hosts discussed the survey. Emily Compagno pointed out the cost-effectiveness and time efficiency of morning dates. Dana Perino mentioned the flexibility they offer. If it goes well, you have a full day ahead. If not, you can easily move on.

Some 23% of those surveyed like that breakfast dates can lead to spontaneous adventures. Morning dates naturally eliminate the expectation of staying out late, providing easy exit points for commitments like work or errands.

The financial aspect is significant. Dating costs have increased, with dinner dates being more expensive. BMO Financial Group reports the average cost for a first date in 2026 was $252 for millennials and $205 for Gen Z.

Dating coach Nicole Colantoni adds that breakfast dates are casual and conducive to conversation. If chemistry exists, the rest of the day awaits.

This trend may see more singles at local cafés, drawn by affordable options and a relaxed setting.
