Son Heung-min, affectionately known as ‘Sonny,’ made headlines in August when he left Tottenham Hotspur for LAFC in the MLS. His contract extends to next year. Son, who stands 6 feet tall, is celebrated as perhaps the most prominent Asian soccer player globally. In South Korea, his popularity surpasses even K-pop, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Sonny’s soccer journey began when he left his homeland as a teenager, starting his professional career in Germany’s Bundesliga with Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen. He joined Tottenham in 2015, marking his presence in 454 matches. In his final year with the Spurs, Sonny captained the team to a UEFA Europa League championship, ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

Son’s leadership on both club and national levels stems from his dynamic style on the pitch. He consistently demonstrates creative playmaking and adaptability to various roles as needed. His long strides enable a pace that poses a challenge to opponents regardless of his position.
Despite a recent scoring slump for both his club and national team, Sonny, a former Premier League Golden Boot recipient, leads MLS in assists, indicating potential growth for South Korea. This summer marks his fourth World Cup appearance, where Mexico poses the biggest threat in their group stage encounters.
