Sophie Cunningham’s Candid Take on WNBA Incident and Player Reactions

Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham is known for her straightforward communication style. Following criticism for her stance that men should not compete in women’s sports, she did not shy away from expressing her views. Recently, Cunningham criticized WNBA MVP and Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson for her confrontation with a Fever fan during Game 2 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

In the podcast “No Hesitation,” hosted by Cunningham and basketball trainer Drew Hanlen, she shared her perspective on the incident involving Wilson and the fan’s alleged comment, “The foul is on you.” Cunningham expressed her thoughts clearly, pointing out that players in women’s sports, who often advocate for equality, should not be upset over such remarks.

“We yell from the rooftops that we want equality,” Cunningham emphasized. “We’re gonna go for them for just pointing and saying, ‘You fouled!’? Like, grow up! What are we doing?”

She critiqued the notion that athletes could attack fans, arguing that both players and fans need to maintain respectful attitudes. Cunningham, often criticized herself for her views on gender and sports, noted her own experiences with public criticism.

“I, hands down, have probably got s— on the entire season,” she commented, addressing the backlash she receives for her beliefs. Despite the negativity, she believes athletes should appreciate their platform and the opportunity to inspire future generations. Cunningham supported the idea that fans will have opinions, which sometimes include criticism.

Cunningham’s comments also touched on a perceived double standard, suggesting Wilson received preferential treatment due to her status in the league. Wilson faced no suspension or fines for her actions, which Cunningham found indicative of bias toward star players. She also mentioned former players and analysts Sydney Colson and Theresa Plaisance entering the altercation, proposing they should face consequences as well.

“There’s definitely a double standard,” Cunningham remarked regarding how incidents are handled depending on the player involved.

Despite her candid remarks, Cunningham stated that the Fever wanted Wilson to play, believing her presence would enhance the game. She humorously noted that fan interactions causing intense reactions may say more about player and viewer mental resilience.

The podcast also compared Wilson’s incident with another involving an Aces fan who entered the court and interacted with Fever player Lexie Hull during a separate game.

Feedback to Cunningham’s comments was diverse, but she remains steadfast in her opinions, contrasting with others who apologized for past remarks perceived as insensitive.
