On Sunday afternoon, a tragic event unfolded at Miami International Airport involving an Amazon cargo plane. Federal investigators have arrived in South Florida to determine the cause of the deadly crash. Witnesses are beginning to recount their experiences, providing insight into the dramatic incident.
Witness Accounts
Grace Mercado shared her experience as she traveled by car with her partner. She described the alarming moment when they heard a loud noise and her partner speculated about a plane crash. Surprised, Mercado looked up from her phone to witness the terrifying scene. The Amazon cargo plane had overshot the runway, crossed the Miami-Dade street, and eventually stopped.
It was extremely loud. It wasn’t anything I’ve ever heard before. It was like a shake. Honestly, I can’t compare it to anything else.
Mercado expressed her shock and confusion as she tried to comprehend the sight. She described the scene as surreal, likening it to a movie. Smoke engulfed the scene, leaving Mercado disoriented.
Emergency Response
Initially, there were no first responders in sight, but that changed quickly. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) reported more than 60 units and approximately 200 personnel rushed to the crash site, with some arriving within seconds.
The incident led to five fatalities and five injuries. In a statement, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue expressed their condolences:
Our hearts are with the victims and their families following the tragic cargo plane crash. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and are keeping everyone who was injured in our thoughts and prayers.
Investigation Underway
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are working to understand why the aircraft left the runway and crashed. The victims’ identities have not been released.
Mercado noted the heavy smoke surrounding the crash site and lack of movement within the aircraft, reinforcing the surreal nature of the event.
