Hong Myung-bo anticipates a supportive crowd as South Korea faces South Africa in their final World Cup Group A match in Monterrey. Despite being far from home, the South Korea team expects a strong turnout of Mexican fans, similar to their previous match against the Czech Republic in Guadalajara.
During a press conference, coach Hong Myung-bo emphasized the importance of the crowd support. Hong, who captained South Korea to the semifinals in the 2002 World Cup, expressed gratitude for the expected atmosphere. He noted that the backing of the fans is a significant advantage for the players.
“We may feel like this is our home ground tomorrow, and that is a very big gift to our players,” said Hong.
South Korea’s victory over Germany in 2018, which aided Mexico’s progression in that tournament, has created a bond between the two groups of fans. This has led to continued warm support from Mexican fans.
In Monterrey, the presence of about 5,000 South Korean immigrants adds to the local fan base. Many reside near Pesquería, attracted by companies like KIA Motors. This has further solidified the connection between South Korea and Mexico.
Placed in Group A, South Korea is playing their group matches in Mexico, co-hosts of the tournament alongside the United States and Canada. Fan Lee Ha-young shared how warmly the Mexican people have welcomed the South Korean supporters, creating a congenial environment.
“The Mexican people have been really warm to us, so now I think tomorrow we will feel like home here in Monterrey,” Lee said.
South Korea, with three points, currently ranks second in the group. South Africa and the Czech Republic have one point each. A draw or win for South Korea secures advancement, while South Africa needs a win to ensure progress.
If the South Korean team finishes second, they will play a round of 32 match in Los Angeles. This city, with a large Korean-American population, offers another favorable setting for the team.
However, many supporters, including Lee, express a preference to continue enjoying the hospitable atmosphere in Mexico.
“We might have to go to the U.S., but I don’t want to leave, I want to stay here in Mexico,” Lee stated.
