On July 14, 2026, Spain’s Men’s National Team celebrated a 2-0 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup Semi Final at Dallas Stadium. This win sets up a historic opportunity for Spain. If the men’s team wins the tournament, Spain will become the first country to win consecutive World Cup titles for both men’s and women’s teams. The women’s team claimed their championship in 2023 and will defend it next year in Brazil.
The Spanish men have been regular competitors on the global stage, participating in 17 out of 23 World Cups and clinching the title once, in 2010. In contrast, the FIFA Women’s World Cup began in 1991 and has seen fewer champions, with only the United States, Germany, Norway, Japan, and Spain winning titles. Notably, only Germany and Spain have won in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
The Spanish Soccer Framework
Spain’s strong soccer infrastructure is spearheaded by La Liga, formally known as the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División. Teams from La Liga consistently rank high in Europe. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are among the top clubs, with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi famously breaking Pelé’s goal-scoring record for a single club. Camp Nou, Barcelona’s stadium, draws soccer enthusiasts from around the world.
Challenges in Spanish Women’s Soccer
The story of Spanish women’s soccer includes significant obstacles. Problems like poor coaching and lack of investment have hindered growth. In 2015, players demanded the removal of coach Ignacio Quereda, citing issues since 1988. Allegations of sexual harassment and verbal abuse emerged in a 2021 documentary, “Romper el silencio.”
Preparations for the 2023 Women’s World Cup prompted players to ask for better team training and resources. A group of 15 players refused national call-ups until changes were made. Controversy continued when federation president Luis Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso without consent. The women’s team stood by Hermoso, calling for Rubiales’s and coach Jorge Vilda’s removal. Rubiales received a three-year suspension and was found guilty of sexual assault.
The men’s national team supported Hermoso. Striker Borja Iglesias chose not to play until Rubiales’s departure. After defeating France, Iglesias and Hermoso shared a viral moment, embracing on the sidelines.
Spain’s men will now face Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday at 3pm ET. This match gives Spain a chance to make football history.
