An exclusive exhibit, the Spirit of ’76, marks a new chapter in celebrating America’s revolutionary history. Matthew Taylor, the exhibit’s designer, guided visitors through the display at Freedom Plaza, featuring figures forgotten by many history books. The collection, revealed for America’s 250th anniversary, includes 22 statues, a ‘Spirit of Liberty’ centerpiece, bronze representations of Revolutionary soldiers, and memorials for those lost aboard British prison ships during the Revolution.
The exhibit includes a newly restored monument of Caesar Rodney, a Delaware statesman who played a crucial role in the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Despite his illness, Rodney famously undertook an arduous 80-mile ride to cast a pivotal vote for independence, breaking a deadlock among Delaware’s delegates. Rodney’s statue now sits near the White House and Capitol, reminding visitors of his indispensable contribution.
In another part of the plaza, Taylor arranged statues of 12 Revolutionary soldiers. These figures depict the contributions of ordinary Americans who played vital roles in the conflict, such as Samuel Whittemore, who fought at 78, surviving multiple wounds; and Simon Knowles, who enlisted at 15 and served alongside George Washington.
A significant but often overlooked tragedy of the Revolution is showcased through the Prison Ship Martyrs memorial, designed to place visitors inside the experience of nearly 12,000 Americans who died in British captivity, more than those who fell in battle. Taylor designed the memorial’s walkthrough experience to immerse guests, supported by ambient sounds from a recently restored fountain.
The exhibit’s prominent piece, the Spirit of Liberty statue, is a 23-foot figure with a bronze replica of the Declaration of Independence and a sword. This towering statue embodies the sacrifices fundamental to the nation’s founding with reliefs depicting key Revolutionary moments—such as the Declaration’s signing and Washington’s pivotal actions.
Visitors, according to Taylor, are encouraged to reflect on unsung heroes who helped build the nation. He wishes for them to identify with these figures and recognize their potential to impact the future. As part of the 250th anniversary celebration, Freedom Plaza invites everyone to witness this homage to America’s revolutionary spirit.
