Stephanie White, coach of the Indiana Fever, expressed frustration about off-court discussions overshadowing the WNBA. On Tuesday, she made her feelings clear. As the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year and one of the original Fever players, White defended herself against critiques following her reaction to a flagrant foul involving DiJonai Carrington and Sophie Cunningham.
White criticized the negativity and division affecting the league, asserting her commitment to her team. “The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win,” she said, emphasizing unity among players. Her passionate remarks ended abruptly as she left without answering questions.
The Fever responded by delivering an impressive performance against the New York Liberty. They shot 59% from the field and 79% on 3-pointers, leading to a 106-92 victory. This win marked their seventh victory in nine games, despite numerous controversies surrounding the team.
Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark was not surprised by either the team’s performance or White’s strong stance. Clark expressed displeasure at the boos directed at White during her introduction. She empathized with White, acknowledging the emotional challenges faced in professional sports.
The controversy began when Carrington struck Cunningham during a game, resulting in Cunningham being knocked to the ground. Carrington received a Flagrant 2, leading to an automatic ejection. A social media post from Carrington suggesting “WHITE PRIVILEGE” added fuel to the situation, though Carrington later clarified that she did not attribute the foul to racial privilege.
Cunningham’s stance against transgender athletes in women’s sports has also sparked debates and rallies. Initial comments by White defending the officiating decision drew criticism from some, including Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith.
White clarified that she had not seen the replay when she first addressed reporters and changed her opinion after reviewing the footage, labeling the foul as “egregious.” She highlighted her commitment to her players’ well-being.
“One of the things I pride myself on is my relationships with my players,” she stated, assuring that she supports her team wholeheartedly.
After the game, Cunningham received an enthusiastic response from fans and shared a supportive moment with White. “There’s been a lot of outside noise, but our locker room is good,” Cunningham said, reinforcing the team’s unity.
White faced a similar situation earlier in the season with another hard foul incident involving Clark, leading to further controversy and speculation about her position.
White emphasized her desire to return the focus to basketball. “It’s a shame we can’t have an opportunity to talk about what great basketball they are playing,” she commented. White reiterated her dedication to leading with love, grace, humility, and integrity, acknowledging her humanity.
