Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith expressed criticism towards former first lady Jill Biden during a recent episode of his “Straight Shooter” podcast, highlighting how her public statements may have negatively impacted the Democratic Party’s image. He referenced her promotion of her memoir, “View From the East Wing,” as an example.
In her book, Jill Biden disclosed her initial concern during the 2024 presidential debate, where she thought Joe Biden may have suffered a stroke due to his lackluster performance against former President Donald Trump. “You had commentators say on TV that he appeared like an elderly patient in a nursing home,” Smith remarked. He questioned why she publicly praised his performance, while now admitting she had serious doubts at the time.
Smith also noted the timing of her admission, which he described as poorly timed considering the upcoming midterm elections. He argued that this kind of public acknowledgment could hurt the party’s chances. “With important races approaching, acknowledging past deceit on behalf of the party isn’t strategic,” he stated. He warned that such admissions could embolden Republicans, even in traditionally Democratic-leaning states like California.
Smith clarified his position, denying any anti-Democrat sentiments. He insisted, “I’m being pro-Democrat. I’m pointing out how to win and avoid public perceptions of deceit.”
Jill Biden’s memoir depicts a contrast to her public remarks following the debate, where she publicly praised Joe Biden’s responses and performance. Despite that, she and Joe were aware of the blunders during the event.
