Steve Ballmer Accepts Responsibility in Kawhi Leonard Scandal

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer accepted responsibility for the Kawhi Leonard scandal on social media, marking his first public comment since the NBA banned him for one year. Ballmer addressed the issue by acknowledging the $30 million fine imposed by the league.

Ballmer expressed remorse, stating, This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets. He apologized to fans, employees, and fellow NBA team owners for the distraction and distress caused by the situation. As the principal owner, he took full responsibility.

The NBA announced on September 2 that the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard violated salary cap circumvention rules. Initially, all parties denied these allegations.

Ballmer’s one-year suspension from all league and team activities stemmed from knowingly seeking to help Mr. Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities and approving a business deal that he knew was a precondition for Aspiration to enter into an endorsement agreement with Mr. Leonard. Additionally, the NBA found fault in his failure to ensure compliance with the league’s circumvention rules.

The NBA’s punishment extended beyond Ballmer. President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year unpaid suspension, and President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank faced a six-month unpaid suspension. The team also lost first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033.

Ballmer’s social media post expressed a commitment to moving past this episode, stating, We are committing to put this chapter behind us. He confirmed compliance with the penalties, payment of the fine, and a focus on future improvements.

He mentioned disagreements over the report findings but emphasized the need to focus on the team’s progress, declaring, The challenges ahead of us are significant, but so is our resolve. His priorities include rebuilding the team, community investment, and maintaining fan confidence.

The NBA made its investigation findings public, revealing transactions between Leonard, the Clippers, and Aspiration. This left Ballmer with little option but to acknowledge attempts to circumvent the salary cap rules.

Reporting by Pablo Torre highlighted a $28 million Aspiration deal, uncovering a broader transaction network. Ballmer’s admission of wrongdoing came over a year after the initial report. The Clippers will face long-term repercussions for these actions.
