Following recent layoffs at ESPN due to its merger with NFL Network, the network is seeking replacements for roles previously held by personalities like Cam Newton and Karl Ravech. A significant vacancy will be filled by Steve Smith Sr., former wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers.

Smith, known for his passionate play and later stint with the Baltimore Ravens, joined NFL Network after his retirement in 2016, according to Sam Neumann of Awful Announcing. In addition to his television work, Smith co-hosts “The 89 Show,” a podcast focusing on wide receivers, with NFL Network insider James Palmer. The podcast provides insights from Smith’s playing career, complemented by Palmer’s contacts in coaching and front-office circles.
Known for Candid Criticisms
Smith is recognized for his outspoken nature, notably in a public spat with wide receiver Jerry Jeudy of the Denver Broncos. Smith labeled Jeudy as “JAG — just a guy,” a comment Jeudy neither forgave nor forgot. Later, Smith extended an apology on NFL Network, expressing hope for Jeudy’s improvement on the field. “I’m sorry I said you were a JAG,” Smith stated, acknowledging he’d advise against trading for Jeudy, questioning his mental readiness to handle criticism.
Although he had a well-publicized conflict with former teammate Cam Newton, the two reconciled during a special episode of “The 89 Show.”
