A landmark U.S. study indicates that invasive mold infections may pose a significant, often overlooked health risk. Conducted in hospitals across the Atlanta area, researchers identified roughly 450 cases over a five-year span, revealing a concerning mortality rate of about 33% among these patients.
Dr. Jeremy Gold of the CDC, the study’s senior author, emphasized the novelty of this estimate, as doctors are not required to report such illnesses. He noted that understanding the prevalence of these infections is crucial, especially as environmental factors like climate change might exacerbate the problem. Dr. Jeffrey Jenks from Duke University supported this notion, acknowledging the potential rise in fungal infections due to changing climate conditions.
The study highlights that many older individuals and those with weakened immune systems, including cancer patients, are particularly vulnerable. Invasive mold diseases originate from specific mold species, primarily infecting individuals through inhaled spores. However, infections can also occur through skin wounds or contaminated medical devices.
The CDC had previously estimated an annual incidence of over 15,000 hospitalizations due to invasive mold infections. The study aimed to refine understanding by collaborating with four Atlanta-area hospitals and their outpatient clinics over the period from 2020 to 2024. Initially, nearly 1,000 potential cases were identified, though this was later refined to approximately 450 confirmed cases.
The data suggests that hospitals with 100 inpatient beds can anticipate around three to five new cases annually. Larger academic hospitals, which handle more complex illnesses, reported higher rates. Most patients involved in the study had compromised immune systems, including individuals recovering from COVID-19. Though exposure often occurs within healthcare facilities, the study did not pinpoint where initial exposure occurred.
Dr. Gold cautioned against generalizing the Atlanta data to other regions, as mold exposure levels can differ significantly. Nonetheless, the study provides hospitals a baseline to gauge whether the number of cases they encounter matches expectations or signals an outbreak. Dr. Jenks valued the findings but recommended further studies in diverse U.S. locations to gain broader insights.
