Three subcontractors associated with the Obama Presidential Center construction have filed claims for nearly $900,000 in unpaid work, adding to existing payment disputes. These companies have lodged mechanics liens, a standard legal measure to recover unpaid construction fees. The claims pertain to work involving structural steel, excavation, concrete, and gymnasium flooring for the Home Court facility, part of the 60,000-square-foot basketball and events center.
Structural steel firm Area Erectors is seeking almost $620,000. Excavation and concrete contractor CSI 3000, a Minority Business Enterprise, claims about $236,000. Gymnasium flooring specialist Floors Incorporated seeks approximately $25,000. Previous payment disputes were related to the main campus, but these claims focus specifically on Home Court, constructed under a distinct contract. This facility is hosting WNBA All-Star Weekend events, attended by former President Obama.
The Home Court disputes reflect broader issues in the Obama Presidential Center project, located in Chicago’s Jackson Park. Financial challenges have arisen, with costs escalating from an estimated $350 million to over $1 billion, alongside legal challenges concerning contracting practices and diversity requirements.
The subcontractors’ claims coincide with the June 19 opening of the Obama Presidential Center. The Cook County Clerk’s Office reports a four-to-six-week delay before documents appear online, contributing to the recent visibility of these liens. Elevate Design Builders, led by minority-owned BOWA Construction, managed Home Court construction under a separate contract. Entities responsible for payments remain undetermined.
Fox News Digital identified additional liens totaling approximately $557,000 for different parts of the project. These include a claim by O’Leary’s Contractors Equipment & Supply for $184,000 in unpaid equipment rental fees, and a claim by the Cement Masons’ Union Trust Funds for over $326,000 in unpaid benefits. Intek Construction Products seeks about $47,000 for supplied labor and materials. These additional liens involve Lakeside Alliance’s management areas.
Previous reports highlighted allegations of unpaid millions by Black subcontractors. Concrete Collective had a claim for over $40 million, replaced by a surety bond as the dispute continues legally. Adamson Plumbing reported operational suspension and worker layoffs, citing $4 million in unmet claims.
Earlier identified liens have seen progress, with two being withdrawn—one due to resolved payment—although financial losses remain a concern for those involved. Several subcontractors faced bankruptcy, though records do not attribute these to the Presidential Center’s construction directly.
