Understanding SCALP Missiles
The SCALP missile represents the French version of the U.K.’s Storm Shadow missile. It is an air-launched, high-precision projectile capable of targeting up to 250 kilometers away. Built on shared technology between France and Britain, the SCALP measures 5.1 meters and offers advanced navigation and high accuracy. The missile is equipped to strike fixed or stationary targets, such as bunkers and infrastructure.
SCALP missiles have seen deployment by British, French, and Italian air forces, and in conflicts in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Despite technological sophistication, they require time to become operational within Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Russia criticized the U.K.’s decision to assist Ukraine, accusing it of intensifying the war. Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov labeled the U.K. as “fanning the flame” of conflict. Prime Minister Burnham dismissed these claims, questioning, “Who started the fire?”
Historical Support and Future Prospects
Since 2023, the U.K. has provided Ukraine with longer-range weapons, including donating Storm Shadow missiles. These enabled Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory.
