Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, is navigating a challenging recovery after a shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach, where she lost an arm. Her family reports she finds comfort in supportive messages from around the world.
Joshua Stewart, Leah’s brother, shared an update on GoFundMe, acknowledging these messages’ impact. He stated, ‘We’ve been sharing some of the beautiful messages with Leah, and she’s loved them, finding inspiration from the care and love you’ve all shared.’ He added Leah has faced tough days but draws strength from the kindness shown.
Struggling with sleep during her recovery, Leah reads messages from her family, community, and others globally. ‘They’ve given her real comfort and strength,’ her brother revealed, using ‘whānau,’ the Maori term for family.
Leah, a mother to a 1-year-old daughter, was attacked on June 13 during a morning swim at Coogee Beach, suffering critical injuries including severe bites, lacerations, fractures, and blood loss. She was placed on life support, in a medically induced coma, and underwent several surgeries. The attack necessitated the amputation of one arm. Her family stated more surgeries are planned as doctors aim to stabilize her condition.
Upon waking from her 10-day coma, Leah communicated her love to her mother and partner, Fernando. Joshua noted her initial thoughts were of her young daughter, August. ‘Leah has a long road ahead,’ he wrote, mentioning her waking as a hopeful step in her recovery.
Joshua apologized for response delays to supporters, citing GoFundMe messaging issues. ‘Leah is beyond overwhelmed at the amazing support and that her story resonates with so many,’ he added, expressing gratitude.
A fundraiser was initiated to support Leah, her partner, and their daughter during this challenging time. The funds will aid in her recovery, providing for prosthetics, rehabilitation, ongoing care, and adjustments needed to return to her role as a mother.
Leah’s family extended thanks to the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew, and medical staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital for their care following the attack. ‘We are shocked and devastated by this event’s impact on our beloved partner, daughter, and mother,’ Joshua Stewart expressed.
