San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s efforts to be traded to the Washington Commanders appear to have stalled. Aiyuk recently posted a video on his social media, directly addressing Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, referring to him by his jersey number, ‘5’.
In the video, Aiyuk said, “‘5’ gonna text me talking about some, ‘You’re on my team now. You follow my rules.’ Boy, I’m a grown man.” This statement followed with, “You gonna have to start running behind your momma and I might believe what you talking about. But until then, no.” Aiyuk also tagged Daniels in a separate post, telling him to “turn your savage up.” This communication suggests Aiyuk is interested in playing alongside Daniels.
Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the 49ers in August 2024. Despite this, his public comments about wanting a trade and his dissatisfaction with the 49ers cast a shadow over his potential move. The 49ers have been exploring a trade for Aiyuk, yet General Manager John Lynch’s remarks imply different conclusions. Lynch mentioned Aiyuk’s status is resolved, indicating no trade is imminent.
The tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been evident for nearly a year. Initially, the team voided his guaranteed money after he missed rehab for a knee injury. Aiyuk expressed his frustration by criticizing the team for not releasing him, suggesting they feared his performance elsewhere. In December, the 49ers placed him on a reserve list, given his absence from the facility.
Before his injury in 2024, Aiyuk achieved 24 catches for 374 yards in that season. His breakout year was in 2023 with 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, aiding the 49ers in their Super Bowl journey.
