Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels is set to make his first NFL start on Sunday. He will step in for the injured Baker Mayfield as the Buccaneers face the Green Bay Packers.
NFL slogans are common among players and coaches, with expressions like “taking it one quarter at a time” and “going 1-0 each week” frequently used. Daniels, a former Kansas Jayhawks star, brought his own insightful quote to the media ahead of the Buccaneers’ Week 4 matchup. He emphasized the importance of being a “thermostat” rather than a “thermometer” on the field. Daniels expressed, “You have to set the temperature of the room, not blend in with it. If the team is low, I have to pick it up. If we’re high, I need to balance it out.”
Daniels’ opportunity comes under critical circumstances, with the Buccaneers eager to avoid an 0-4 record. This situation is typically labeled “must win,” especially as they aim to stay competitive with Mayfield sidelined for at least three weeks due to a dislocated right thumb.
Coach Todd Bowles pointed out that while the spotlight is on Daniels, the responsibility is shared. Bowles stated, “For us, it’s about getting a win. Daniels isn’t playing alone; everyone has to do their job. Coaching and execution are crucial on both sides of the ball, including special teams.” He added, “Hitting the field for the first time is part of any player’s journey, whether drafted early or picked as a free agent.”
Ahead of the game, Daniels sought advice from Mayfield, who advised, “You’ve been dreaming of this opportunity. Stay composed, play as yourself, and go make football plays.”
Tampa Bay’s season has been challenging so far, necessitating a solid performance to turn things around.
