On Monday night, three teenagers were injured in a shooting near 57th Street Beach in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The incident took place as a large group of teens gathered in the area. Police and anti-violence workers are preparing for similar events throughout the summer.
According to Chicago police, the teens were gathered around 10 p.m. on the 1600 block of East 55th Street when they heard gunshots. Three individuals reported feeling pain afterwards. An 18-year-old man sustained a hand injury and was transported to UChicago Medicine in good condition. A 19-year-old was shot in the leg and also taken to the same hospital, where he was reported in good condition. Another 19-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the hip and went to the hospital on his own. He too was in good condition, police said.
Police have not confirmed any reports of a ‘teen takeover’ at the beach, describing it simply as a large gathering. Currently, no arrests have been made in relation to the shootings. Detectives are conducting an investigation.
