Temp Suspension of Sen. Sullivan’s X Account Amid Alaska Senate Race Controversy

Days before Alaska’s Senate election, Senator Dan Sullivan’s campaign account on X was temporarily suspended. X flagged the profile under rules for inauthentic accounts. The @DanSullivan_AK profile was removed on Friday and restored by Saturday afternoon, but X hasn’t publicly explained the reason for the suspension.

The timing coincides with a contentious race involving Democrat Mary Peltola and independent candidate Dan J. Sullivan, creating confusion due to the identical names on the ballot.

The Two Dan Sullivans

The presence of two candidates named Dan Sullivan has stirred political controversy. Republicans are concerned this could confuse voters, detracting support from the incumbent. The New York Times revealed a report alleging that Peltola’s campaign and Democratic operatives may have recruited candidates sharing Sullivan’s name to impact the election.

Dan J. Sullivan denies recruitment claims, while Peltola denies any involvement. Governor Mike Dunleavy has ordered an investigation into potential state law violations regarding candidate recruitment. Additionally, the Justice Department has pursued legal action to prevent Alaska from certifying election results if the second Sullivan’s candidacy affects outcomes.

Candidate Responses and Polling Data

Senator Sullivan was questioned about his willingness to accept election results, regardless of the outcome, during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper. Sullivan affirmed he would accept the results, stating, “No, I’m going to accept the election results.”

Polling reflects a tight race. An Alaska Survey Research poll showed a narrow lead for Peltola in a ranked choice runoff, and an earlier Data for Progress poll also indicated Peltola ahead. The contest has been labeled as a toss-up by multiple outlets, suggesting it’s highly competitive.

Looking Ahead

Though Sullivan’s account is back online, X’s lack of explanation leaves uncertainty. This incident adds tension just before voters go to the polls on November 3, emphasizing the race’s significance. National attention on Alaska’s Senate contest continues as voters prepare to make their choice.
