Tennessee Titans’ Surprising NFL Draft Pick: Carnell Tate

The Tennessee Titans made waves in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 4 overall. Many expected Tate to be drafted by a team where he would serve as the No. 2 receiver, given his role during his college years at Ohio State. Analysts predicted a likely fit with the Washington Commanders at No. 7 overall, alongside Terry McLaurin to assist quarterback Jayden Daniels. Other potential destinations included the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs, where he would complement established offenses without carrying the full load.

Tate’s selection by the Titans surprised many, given the team’s recent emphasis on building around their 2025 No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Cam Ward. Ward voiced strong support for Tate’s ability to thrive in single coverage matchups, expecting an impactful year due to the offensive fit and coaching. He emphasized that Tate would receive quality coaching while maintaining the freedom to play intuitively.

The Titans have transformed their coaching staff, appointing Robert Saleh as head coach and former Giants head coach Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator. Daboll, recognized for his role in developing Josh Allen as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, aims to replicate a similar dynamic in Nashville. His history includes acquiring receiver Stefon Diggs for the Bills in 2020, which catalyzed Allen’s breakout performance. The Titans hope that Tate will offer the same supporting role for Ward’s development, enhancing the offensive strategy.
