Jordan’s air defenses successfully intercepted five missiles launched from Iran on Thursday morning, as reported by the country’s state-run Petra news agency. This event followed a U.S. military operation described as ‘a heavy wave of strikes against Iran’ in retaliation for a prior Iranian missile attack on a U.S. base in Jordan. Fortunately, no casualties resulted from Jordan’s missile interception, which was confirmed by a spokesman for the nation’s armed forces.
The U.S. Central Command disclosed via social media that the strikes, lasting over two hours, targeted various assets belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. These included military command centers, missile and drone facilities, as well as coastal surveillance and defense sites.
The U.S. President had earlier promised to respond forcefully to Iran after the country’s attack on a Jordanian base hosting U.S. troops. Iranian state media reported minor injuries caused by attacks on Qeshm island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, and noted explosions within Khuzestan province in the northwest.
This series of incidents followed a U.S. and Saudi Arabian collaborative operation against Iran-backed militias in Iraq on Wednesday. This operation resulted in the deaths of at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers. Additionally, drone strikes ignited fires on two natural gas vessels in Egypt’s Damietta port, according to the British maritime security firm Ambrey. Although the responsible party remains unidentified, the affected vessels included a U.S.-owned storage facility and a Greek-owned tanker, with no reported injuries.
Recent flare-ups after a period of relative calm have heightened the risk of renewed warfare. The confrontations challenge attempts to de-escalate a five-month conflict that has destabilized the world economy and lacks popular support in the U.S. Furthermore, the ongoing tensions might exacerbate fears regarding the U.S.’s diminishing stock of sophisticated munitions needed to safeguard its bases and allies.
