As the MLB season progresses, frustrations appear to bubble over for teams experiencing disappointing outcomes. The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers found themselves embroiled in a heated exchange on Wednesday.
During the Mariners’ 4-2 victory, Seattle pitcher Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson faced ejections amidst a sequence of contentious hit-by-pitch incidents. Five players were struck by pitches, leading to the benches clearing in the eighth inning. Post-game, both teams expressed surprisingly calm reflections.
“It got me good, but I feel like it’s kind of professional,” Detroit’s Gleyber Torres commented on the thigh hit, according to MLB.com’s Jason Beck. “Don’t try to hit me in my face or anything like that, just a good enough part of my body. I’m good, no problem.”
However, during the game, both teams showed significantly less composure. Among those hit were Seattle’s Cal Raleigh and Detroit’s Riley Greene, Max Clark, and Zach McKinstry, in addition to Torres. Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo managed to deliver seven scoreless innings, even while hitting three batters. Both teams seemed quick to take offense at perceived provocations.
Detroit’s challenges this season are well-known. They recently traded ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mariners, after nearly reaching the World Series last fall, have struggled to gain momentum, maintaining a near .500 record. They’ve stayed in the AL West race partly due to the inconsistent performances of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros. Seattle began Thursday in third place within the division and outside the AL Wild Card bracket.
Given this context, tensions in August seem inevitable. Although playoffs may not feature in this year’s prospects for either club, the teams are embroiled in their own fierce rivalry.
