Texas Engineer Fatally Stabbed in Random Park Attack

A 62-year-old engineer from Texas, Andrew James Wimsatt, was killed in a random stabbing incident at a park bench in Round Rock, Texas. This occurred on September 7 shortly after Wimsatt visited his mother at a nearby nursing home. Authorities have arrested a 26-year-old suspect, Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu, on charges of murder and theft.

Andrew Wimsatt, an Austin resident, was seated on a park bench at 11 a.m. A man, identified as Ogbodiegwu, allegedly approached Wimsatt from behind and stabbed him repeatedly in the neck.

The incident was captured on surveillance footage, as confirmed by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. Despite Wimsatt’s attempts to resist, he could not fend off his attacker, who later cleaned the blood off on his shirt and left the scene.

Wimsatt held a Ph.D. in civil engineering and worked at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, even after his retirement. He also had involvement with several Fox News hosts, having attended live events and shared TV clips with personalities like Greg Gutfeld and Kat Timpf.

Kat Timpf described Wimsatt as a “fan who became a friend” and shared that they were regularly in touch. Wimsatt was credited by peers and Fox News personalities for his generosity and kindness.

The accused, Ogbodiegwu, has a history of run-ins with the law, with a criminal record dating back to 2017. This includes prior arrests for theft and using fake identification, with his most recent release from custody occurring in June.

Following the attack, witnesses discovered Wimsatt on the ground and called 911. Paramedics announced him dead at the scene. Authorities managed to gather evidence, including prints and the murder weapon, leading to the arrest of Ogbodiegwu. When confronted, Ogbodiegwu allegedly suggested having a twin brother but failed to provide details.

Benedict Ogbodiegwu remains held on a $1 million bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 8. The case has raised concerns regarding the accountability of allowing repeat offenders freedom to roam.
