Texas Teen Seeks New Trial After Murder Conviction

In McKinney, Texas, a legal decision on whether to grant a new trial to Karmelo Anthony, a teenager convicted of murder, is underway. Anthony was found guilty for the stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet.

A recent development saw the original trial judge removed from the case, providing potential relief for Anthony. Judge Michael Chitty has been appointed to consider the request for a retrial. Anthony, now 19, received a sentence of 35 years. He appeared at a hearing dressed in a green prison uniform, accompanied by his parents and Metcalf’s family.

The defense highlighted the removal of Judge John Roach, who publicly affirmed the jury’s guilty verdict. Anthony’s lawyers criticized the trial for rigorous courtroom practices and unclear jury instructions. Additionally, they claim a disagreement over trial focus influenced Anthony’s choice not to testify.

During the initial trial, jurors dismissed Anthony’s self-defense argument. Accounts from students indicated a quarrel erupted because Anthony refused to vacate an area claimed by Metcalf’s team on a rainy day.

The incident prompted extensive social media engagement, framing the situation in racial terms. Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was white, though attorneys asserted race was not a factor in the altercation.

At a recusal hearing, Anthony’s team targeted comments from Roach broadcasted on television, showing the judge’s belief in the jury’s correctness. Roach also defended his rules and acknowledged the online discourse surrounding the trial.

The confrontation took place in the bleachers of Memorial High School. Metcalf and others repeatedly told Anthony to leave, sparking tension. Witnesses stated Anthony instigated the confrontation, and eventually, after being pushed, Anthony reportedly pulled a knife from a bag and fatally stabbed Metcalf.
