Industry analysts have revealed that Fox Corporation is securing a significant bargain for broadcasting the 2026 World Cup. Despite the estimated value of broadcasting rights being as much as $1.5 billion, Fox is paying under $500 million. This situation has raised inquiries about Fox’s acquisition strategy.
The origins of this deal trace back to March 2014, within FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich. FIFA’s board assembled in a soundproof room reserved for critical decisions. They faced a need to resolve a significant issue concerning hundreds of millions of dollars. This issue began with a separate decision made in 2010 when FIFA selected Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup. This choice led to complications with Fox, one of FIFA’s key partners.
The searing heat of Qatar’s summers made it unsuitable for the traditional June and July World Cup schedule. Consequently, FIFA shifted the tournament to the late fall. Fox had previously acquired the English-language rights in the U.S. for summer tournaments. This change resulted in potential conflicts for the broadcaster.
Despite these challenges, Fox secured the rights for the 2026 World Cup at a notably reduced cost. Conversations and details around the negotiations and financial agreements have largely remained undisclosed.
