“Wishbone,” the beloved PBS series from the 1990s, featured Soccer, the canine actor best known as Wishbone. With 50 episodes and a finale movie, “Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West,” the show captivated both children and adults. It successfully combined youth-friendly antics with sincere adaptations of classic stories like “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Now, years after the series ended, the original team has created a documentary titled “What’s the Story, Wishbone?” This film explores the show’s rise and its unexpected cancellation, highlighting insights from those involved at the beginning. Such a project may pave the way for new “Wishbone” stories, promising to engage fans until then.
In a recent conversation, Betty A. Buckley, producer of both the original series and the documentary, shared experiences from the original set and the making of “What’s the Story, Wishbone?” Buckley emphasized the significance of respecting the young audience and valuing them as viewers. This respect has helped maintain “Wishbone’s” status as a cultural fixture, still resonating with audiences long after its initial PBS run.
The documentary “What’s the Story, Wishbone?” is airing on Public Television Stations. It will become available for digital purchase on June 10.
