The ongoing war in Ukraine draws frequent comparisons to World War I, both for its relentless infantry attacks and significant casualties. Originally, surpassing such a devastating conflict in duration seemed improbable. Yet, as of Thursday, Ukraine’s war has reached 1,569 days — outlasting the over four-year span of World War I.
In February 2022, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia initiated an invasion, anticipating a swift collapse of Ukraine. Unexpectedly, after initial setbacks, Ukraine restrained the Russian advance, leading to a prolonged confrontation.
Many military personnel didn’t foresee such a lengthy engagement. A Ukrainian soldier, who identified himself only by the call sign France, referenced his past service in the French Foreign Legion, saying, “I thought maybe two or three years, and then politicians will find some kind of consensus.”
With negotiations stalled, there is no evident conclusion soon. Polls indicate about half of Ukrainians are pessimistic, believing the conflict won’t resolve before the next year. Should the war continue, it risks approaching the six-year mark of World War II’s duration. Some Ukrainians assert that the present conflict began back in 2014 with the Russian annexation of Crimea.
For Ukrainians, the war’s persistence has increasingly become a harsh reality, with cities like Kostiantynivka suffering severe drone strikes. Despite the challenges, their resolve remains unshaken as they confront a future filled with uncertainty.
