Every election cycle, campaign costs rise and results tighten. Political strategists and consultants often seek new tactics to secure victories, focusing on various demographics. Yet, they frequently overlook a crucial and growing voter base: Asian American voters. In recent elections, Asian Americans have played a decisive role in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Here, the number of Asian American voters exceeded the margins of victory, making their potential impact significant.
Asian American Voter Impact
In the 2020 elections, Asian American voters were pivotal, particularly in states that delivered victory to President Biden. For example, in Georgia, the Asian American voter turnout increased by nearly 62,000 between 2016 and 2020, contributing to Biden’s narrow win of fewer than 12,000 votes. Nevada saw a 66 percent rise in Asian American votes, and Arizona experienced a 58 percent increase, both crucial for Democratic wins.
Shifts in Voter Support
Despite these gains, support among Asian Americans for the Democratic presidential candidate diminished from 2020 to 2024, with a 10-point gain for Trump among Asian voters. The Asian communities in Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada that were instrumental in 2020 did not have the same impact in 2024, due to reduced grassroots efforts and strategic disengagement.
Diverse and Significant Electorate
It’s critical to understand the diversity within the Asian American electorate. It comprises various ethnicities, languages, and experiences, requiring tailored and multilingual approaches to connect effectively. This diversity spans from Filipino families in California to Korean Americans in Georgia, demanding more than a one-size-fits-all strategy.
Political Party Engagement
Asian American voters frequently feel overlooked by political parties. Despite being considered a reliable Democratic constituency, they often report low engagement. In 2024, 42 percent of Asian American voters said neither major party nor any candidate reached out to them, according to AAPI Data.
Sustained Organizing is Key
The Asian American Power Network, active across 12 states, emphasizes the importance of ongoing community organizing. Quick, last-minute efforts or superficial investments often fall short, as seen in previous elections with other demographic groups.
Call to Action for Democratic Party
Asian American voters have shown themselves as a margin of victory, yet remain underutilized. The Democratic Party must learn from past elections and invest in these communities now, ahead of the 2026 midterms. Their participation could be the key to clinching crucial victories in future elections.
Mary Lou Akai-Ferguson, executive director of the Asian American Power Network, stresses that sustained investment is necessary to ensure that Asian American voters remain integral to electoral successes.
