Professor Joe Eisenmann, with 30 years of experience in sports science, suggests this could be a perception driven by cognitive bias, not data. Eisenmann notes the allure of youth resonates strongly, similar to the fascination with speed.
Today’s global connectivity means breaking news about a young athlete can spread worldwide within seconds. “We’re more globalised, so the world is hearing about these young talents more than before,” Eisenmann explains.
Despite heightened physical standards at the elite level, the challenge for young athletes remains significant. Studies indicate that footballers are taller and quicker compared to past decades. Dr. Sean Cumming of the University of Bath points out the athletic game is harder now due to higher physicality.

It’s essential to ensure holistic development while mitigating possible psychological and physical risks. “Finding ways to keep young athletes healthy and happy is vital for effective early sports specialisation,” Eisenmann emphasizes.
To manage risks, diverse movement patterns, enjoyment of sport, and valuing off-time are essential. Proactive organizations are addressing potential downsides of early specialisation, aiming for holistic athlete growth.
Identifying biological ages rather than chronological ages helps understand athlete growth and development. In 2015, English football’s Premier League tapped Cumming to assist academies in assessing biological ages.
Take Max Dowman, who debuted for Arsenal at 15. Cumming explains developmental differences affect performance, but late developers can excel eventually given their technical and tactical prowess.
Young athletes also experience varying growth rates, potentially causing setbacks. UNICEF data signals rapid growth spurts and associated injuries sometimes diminish performance temporarily. Identifying these can prevent rash decisions during growth-related form dips.
