Chicago recently hosted the WNBA All-Star Game for the second time in five years, affirming the city’s passion for women’s basketball. The event proved a triumph, with over 20,000 fans filling the United Center on Saturday, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity.
Chicago’s commitment to women’s sports is evident, featuring three dedicated sports bars: Whiskey Girl Tavern, Babe’s Sports Bar, and Level Sporting Club. These venues celebrated the occasion with events sponsored by major companies like Nike. The city also hosted the All-Star Game back in 2022; however, at that point, the popularity of the WNBA had not yet reached its current peak. The previous event took place at Wintrust Arena, intended for smaller audiences.
Significant changes have occurred since then. Players now face packed schedules during All-Star weekends, while fans must navigate a crowded agenda of parties, panels, and pop-ups across the city. High-profile personalities like Barack Obama, Dwyane Wade, and Jayson Tatum were among those attending the festivities.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the absence of the Chicago Sky from official WNBA events was glaring. No Sky players participated in the festivities, and their training facility remains under construction, delaying its opening until 2026. Health issues plaguing key players may have contributed to their absence, as did a decision to forgo Friday’s Shooting Stars event. Additionally, the team faces the setback of losing Rickea Jackson to injury.
This lack of participation underscores a troubling trend for the Sky. Although the team secured the bid to host the All-Star weekend and organized successful events, they have been stuck on the sidelines. Historically, the Sky have a mixed reputation, marked by significant challenges such as Sylvia Fowles’ departure in 2014. Despite these hurdles, the team avoided prolonged downturns. The situation is stark now, as the franchise risks missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
The WNBA is expanding, making All-Star selections more competitive. The Sky’s continued absence underscores an urgent need for a transformative player. The franchise’s history boasts talent like Candice Dupree and Elena Delle Donne, yet today they lack such a centerpiece figure.
