Frank Foster, at 93, continues to serve as a referee, showcasing agility and stamina on the soccer field three times weekly for his local soccer association. His career spans 46 years, during which he has officiated approximately 5,500 matches.
Foster attributes his endurance and longevity to healthy habits and a solid diet, shaped by wartime rations during his youth. He recalls that these rations provided “healthy food” instead of “sweets and cakes,” contributing to his lifelong fitness.
His pre-match routine is rooted in nutrition, starting with a breakfast of oatmeal, cereal, or marmalade on toast, supplying him with energy for a full ninety minutes. His dedication keeps him active in men’s, women’s, and children’s games, a passion he humorously states he hasn’t retired from yet.
Foster, a former military veteran, excelled in his referee exam in 1980, scoring 98 percent. His strong mental and authoritative presence matches his physical endurance. He maintains control through old-school discipline, feeling that current officials are too lenient, letting player antics disrupt the sport.
He insists on strict pre-match rules, showing little tolerance for intimidation or theatrical diving. He challenges players crowding him, saying, “stay where you are” and threatens a yellow card for disrespecting boundaries.
Averse to relying on video play reviews, Foster believes it instills “aggression and disappointment” over minor offside calls, noting, “Sometimes it is only the player’s toe which is offside — it’s ridiculous.” He keeps his uniform neat and clean, ensuring his Adidas boots are scrubbed after each game.
