A New York City police detective and four children were among those wounded in separate shootings in Brooklyn over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Detective Robert Karroll of the Sex Offender Monitoring Unit was shot in the back of his ballistic vest during an encounter with an armed 18-year-old in Crown Heights early Sunday morning, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Karroll is recovering at Kings County Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Another officer sustained contusions to the face and shoulder during the incident. Scott Munro, President of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, condemned the ongoing violence, stating, “This has to stop.” He expressed relief that the detective was not fatally injured, sparing the department from planning another funeral.
This has to stop. Our members are out there day and night protecting the people of New York.
Commissioner Tisch described the incident, noting that officers in an unmarked vehicle near Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place were approached by a suspect. The circumstances remain unclear due to the absence of body-worn camera footage, but Tisch confirmed the shooting occurred rapidly. The police vehicle sustained multiple bullet holes, highlighting the dangerous encounter.
Shortly after the detective’s shooting, another incident unfolded in Coney Island, where eight people, including four children aged 14, 12, 7, and 6, were shot. All were hospitalized, with seven in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition.
In the case involving officers, they exited their vehicle to engage the armed suspect. Although three officers discharged their weapons, the suspect was unharmed. He was later apprehended after a foot chase, resisting arrest before a taser was used.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed relief that Detective Karroll was wearing a bulletproof vest, sparing his life. Detective Karroll is a husband and father of three.
I’m relieved that the officer, Detective Robert Karroll, was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured as a result.
The police presence in the area was part of a Fourth of July violence reduction strategy targeting ongoing crew violence. Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, as there is no body-camera video of the officer-involved shooting.
