The Swamp Cooler: An Early Cooling Solution in the American Southwest

Before air conditioning became widespread in the United States and temperatures escalated, residents of the Southwest endured intense heat. Living under dry conditions with little relief from the scorching sun was a daily reality. People found ways to adapt, such as sleeping outdoors with damp sheets or avoiding work during the hottest daylight hours.

A notable innovation, the “swamp cooler,” provided much-needed relief. This device improved upon ancient methods of cooling, where air was fanned over water in clay pots or jars. During the early 20th century, these principles were refined in America to create the evaporative cooler.

In 1908, Oscar Palmer perfected the United States’ first evaporative cooling system in Arizona. The mechanism was straightforward: a fan drew hot air through water-saturated pads, which cooled and humidified the air before directing it indoors.

By the 1930s, evaporative coolers significantly impacted regions like New Mexico and Nevada, making them more habitable. Despite the prevalence of air conditioning today, swamp coolers remain valuable in arid areas.

Eric Verpolegen, founder of CoolVeg, emphasizes their effectiveness in dry climates such as Arizona, stating, “If it’s really dry out, in Arizona, you’re going to get a greater cooling effect.” However, these coolers are less effective in humid regions.

Traditional air conditioning didn’t become common in the U.S. until the 1950s, leaving evaporative coolers as a cost-efficient, low-energy option where conditions permit. Ankit Kalanki from RMI highlights the importance of these coolers in certain climates, suggesting they are a viable solution where air conditioning is unavailable.

In humid areas facing increasing moisture issues, innovations attempt to combine evaporative cooling with humidity control. Kalanki notes ongoing efforts to develop hybrid solutions for optimal effectiveness.

The demand for cooling solutions continues to grow as temperatures rise, prompting increased energy use and potential greenhouse gas emissions. This makes Palmer’s early cooler technology, along with modern upgrades, crucial for sustainable climate management.
