Youth sports extend beyond creating the next sports superstar. They foster community and lifelong positive habits. Former NFL Pro Bowl running back, Jonathan Stewart, captures this essence. He emphasizes youth sports provide essential community support, aiding in the transition to adulthood.
Stewart, alongside former Carolina Panthers teammates Greg Olsen and Luke Kuechly, coaches a middle school football team. Their focus isn’t only on football skills but nurturing a community environment. Stewart shared with OutKick the importance of community in youth sports, stating, “It’s not about becoming an NFL star but creating a supportive community.” This community helps young participants balance activities like study, home responsibilities, and play.
Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina benefits from an experienced coaching staff. However, Stewart stresses their credentials are less vital than their role as mentors. He loves working with middle schoolers due to their impressionability. “They want to learn and are receptive when treated with respect,” Stewart remarked.
Youth sports offer children a space to seek belonging and purpose. Stewart underscores the importance of this environment, particularly for middle schoolers finding their way. Participation in sports provides social connections and personal growth opportunities.
Stewart’s coaching journey began when his daughters attended Charlotte Christian School. Though reluctant initially, he joined the coaching staff, enriching his family’s connection to the sport. “My daughters enjoy games and see football as a family tradition,” he noted.
Football often acts as a life teacher. Stewart believes it demonstrates selflessness, responsibility, and introspection. Watching players evolve on and off the field is highly fulfilling for Stewart.
Stewart fondly recalls Jack, a small but dedicated player on the team. “Jack shows loyalty and effort, regardless of obstacles,” Stewart shared. Jack’s progression from a seventh to an eighth-grade leader highlights the personal development fostered by youth sports.
In times when negative behaviors among adults at youth sporting events gain attention, Stewart reminds us: these activities are for the children and the community they cultivate.
Away from the field, Stewart emphasizes the importance of oral hygiene. Partnering with Oral-B and Crest, he integrates health practices into his daily routine. “Oral care is essential, matching the importance of physical activities,” Stewart remarked.
Stewart’s career spanned ten seasons with the Panthers and one with the New York Giants. In his career, he gained 7,335 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns. His experience underscores the multifaceted benefits of sports engagement beyond athletic achievement.
