Alyssa Farah Griffin, co-host of The View, criticized the Democratic Party for the inadequate vetting of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Platner faces several scandals, including allegations of sexual abuse.
Co-host Sunny Hostin argued Platner should withdraw from the race because Democrats need to gain control of the Senate. Griffin expressed frustration with the Democratic Party, stating they have mishandled the situation for years. She emphasized that winning Maine was crucial for Democrats to secure the Senate. Despite having ample time to vet a candidate against Susan Collins, the party failed to do so effectively.
Griffin noted, “That was always going to be one of the important pickup seats. They had six years to recruit against Susan Collins and to vet somebody and to look into their past statements.” She highlighted the urgency by comparing it to Texas, which recently nominated Ken Paxton, whom she described as a ‘lunatic’. She questioned how the Democratic Party missed red flags in Platner’s background.
Whoopi Goldberg remarked that people were aware of Platner’s issues and the hosts had previously discussed them. Despite allegations, some voters overlook flaws when choosing candidates.
“I don’t know — given what’s happened just in our world right now…I think people held their nose and said…I’m going to take a step,” Goldberg said.
The hosts agreed political parties often neglect character-based vetting. Hostin labeled Platner as a racist and homophobe but admitted she would still support him due to the nation’s state. She criticized the Republican Party, stating they couldn’t claim moral superiority.
Hostin stated she would vote for Platner in Maine despite allegations, saying, “I said it, if I lived in Maine I would have, you know, plugged my nose and would have voted for him anyway. I think we are in a time of existential crisis in this country.” She criticized Republicans for setting a low bar and trying to assume moral high ground.
The discussion concluded with consensus among hosts that Platner should exit the race.
